Events: Nuclear Africa 2016 Conference - Review
The Nuclear Africa 2016 conference was held in conjunction with Necsa. As is the standard design approach, the conference was held at a country venue, the idea being to encourage a feeling of mutual interaction and tranquillity.
The conference was oversubscribed and extra chairs had to be brought in to accommodate the overflow.
Dr Kelvin Kemm chaired the opening session and the CEO of Necsa Mr Phumzile Tshelane presented the opening address.
Prominent international speakers included: Dr Helmut Engelbrecht: Chair of the Word Nuclear Association (WNA), and Dr Mikhail Chudakov: Deputy Director General of the IAEA. We also had Mr Tim Yeo: Chair of New Nuclear Watch Europe (NNWE).
Our primary sponsors have to be thanked. The primary sponsor, the Diamond Sponsor was Rosatom; the Gold Sponsor was URENCO and the Silver Sponsor was SPIC - China. All three sponsors had delegations present.
During the first evening's cocktail networking function, during lunch breaks and refreshment breaks considerable interaction took place. People sat outdoors in the sunshine and got into animated discussions about all aspects of nuclear power.
The third day is traditionally a day of no formal proceedings, but is allocated to networking and debate concerning the presentations of the past two days. A whole sheep was cooking on the spit; and food and drinks were served under the wide blue sky. The last people left at sunset.
Post conference reaction has been very positive, and some people have already booked return trips to South Africa in the next couple of months.
